Camino del Norte & Camino Primitivo

We walked the Camino del Norte from Irun to Ovideo, then joined the Camino Primitivo to Lugo in Spring 2008.

The Way starts at Irun on the French border passing through the autonomous communities of Pais Vasco (Basque Country), Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia.

In the 9th century when most of Spain was under Moorish control the Camino Primitivo (Original Way) was the first Camino route to Santiago de Compostela.  The Northern Route was used by pilgrims during the time of Muslim domination which made the Camino Frances difficult and dangerous.
